The Shards Spire

The Shard got its name from its glass façade which comprises of “shards” of glass leaning slightly inwards tapering to a point at the top. These shards rise independently of one another not touching on their way up giving the building an open look allowing air to seemingly flow right through it.

The tip, a full 309.6 meters above the pavement below is what catches my eye. The Shard is the tallest building in Europe and at its peak is completely open to the elements. The building actually appears to have 3 peaks rather than the more traditional one, with 3 pieces of glass reaching quite individually into the sky. It is an unorthodox yet very special tip to what is now a landmark of London.

The “spire” that sits on top of the Shards 72 habitable floors adds a further 15 levels. Constructed using a steel core and glass cladding, the spire is what makes this building a true marvel of architectural design. It gives the building a real USP, absorbing light through its crevices and reflecting off its glass cladding. The building will shine differently wherever and whenever you are viewing it.
